It seemed fitting that at the beginning of this month, we passed the 8,600kg mark in the amount of recycled plastic that we have used in our products. After all, it is Plastic Free July.
Globally, 100 000 marine animals die every year as a result of plastic pollution. With less than 12% of our plastics being recycled, an estimated 13 million tons enter our oceans annually - that's equivalent to a garbage trucks load every minute. According to the UN plastic has already begun to enter the food chain and end up on our plates.
At WaterUps® we understand the importance of ending single use plastics and promoting sustainability. That is why we only use 100% recycled plastic in our wicking system products. We outsource our manufacturing to Reln Industries in southwestern Sydney, who are one of the largest consumers of recycled plastic in Australia. They source resin for us from Martogg in Melbourne.
We use PIR or Post Industrial Resin for our cells, pipes and sub-Irrigation Channels. This type of plastic is made up of the perfectly fine leftovers from the manufacture of polypropylene plastic containers. The PIR is cleaned and molded to form new containers, preventing the leftovers from reaching landfills.
In February we started using PCR or Post Consumer Resin for our Square Planters. PCR is manufactured from used, recycled and repurposed plastic that is collected from beaches, oceans, land and recycling plants. These plastics include plastic bottles, cleaning product bottles, plastic containers etc.
